the nose twitching desperately to try to compose a better understanding

I swam perhaps ten full times around this boat. The owners were really friendly, it was a traditional old fishing boat, the weather was nice, the sky was blue, everything rocking. Almost one hour into this, I finally noticed a pair of black eyes behind a black snout, staring at me through the vent of the ship’s bulwark, the nose twitching desperately to try to compose a better understanding of what was that thing in the water. It was the owner’s Black Labrador – the bulwark was too tall for him, the vent too small to pass his full head.

Dogs are arguably the best part of humans.
