This project involved a bit of thermal discomfort

At this point I should probably tell you a bit about temperatures. This project involved a bit of thermal discomfort – my homeostasis was often challenged, as the temperature could be as low as -15ºC (air). Not many people know that low a temperature can happen without forming ice on the sea; the freezing point of salt water is as low as -2.8ºC but even the smallest wave movement will stop the formation of ice and the first half meter of water becomes a translucid soup of non-solid salty slush. Photos taken in these conditions need to be either cm above the water, or about one meter below that slush.

When there’s no wind, ice sheets will form and become a favorite thing to play with in the water – it looks, feels and sounds like glass panes on windows. I have always been partial to the sound of breaking glass.
