There’s one discrete assumption all animals share with us:
one ultimate moment of hope,
where nothing seems yet lost.

I’ve never seen a cod put up a real fight

Cod fish’s attitude towards death is rather nihilistic. The fish acts like it doesn’t really believe in the way things seem to be turning, and behaves like its mind is elsewhere and cannot be bothered to deal with the deathly pull. I’ve seen other fish display violent and dangerous reactions against the line, against the hook, against fate – to be around some of large tunids on those moments may be very ill advised. I’ve never seen a cod put up a real fight, or at least a fight proportionate to its size and strength. There’s always one final rush down, one “please let me go”, and then it’s over.
